AI Policy
With the advent of large language models, we are all reckoning with changes to our work and personal lives. I believe that AI does not have a role to play in craft and artmaking. They are uniquely human tasks that are not meant to be automated away.
I also believe it is important to disclose that I do use Claude Code as part of my software development process.
My aim is to always be transparent with any AI usage because I believe people should have informed consent about the products they use.
No AI in the Product
There are no AI-features in Galley. Nor do I intend to add any. I have taken care to make sure that the work submitted to Galley is not read into any LLMs within the product.
The editorial review process demands time, process, and a human touch. My goal in developing Galley is to remove as much unnecessary friction in the process so that editors and reviewers can do their jobs. I believe that the manual review and reading of work is a necessary friction.
Furthermore, I do not want to build a tool in which human created work is inadvertently fed into a model for training. Keeping AI out of the product helps prevent this.
No AI in the Marketing
All copy in the marketing is written by me. No AI-generated images will be used in any marketing materials for Galley. Marketing includes posts on Bluesky, Instagram, and Substack. I like writing and I don’t think AI writes like me.
AI for Development
An LLM is used to aid in writing code for Galley. I have chosen to use Anthropic’s Claude Code tool. Using Claude allows me to write code more quickly and securely. However, this is not a “vibe-coded” site. I use this tool when it is appropriate in an effort to provide the best experience possible for users.
I also run an autonomous development agent that picks up small issues and submits pull requests using Claude. Every change it makes is reviewed by me before merging.
I have chosen Anthropic in part because it is more ethically conscious than other companies in the space. My monthly energy use for developing Galley with Claude is 0.5 kWh. This is equivalent to running a laptop for 8 hours or driving an electric vehicle 2 miles.
Galley uses Sentry for error tracking, which includes AI-powered issue analysis. This operates on error reports and stack traces only — never on submission content or user data.
